Getting Around

Portland has the best public transit of any mid-size American city. The MAX light rail system runs on five lines connecting the airport (Red Line), Beaverton (Blue, Red), Hillsboro (Blue), Gresham (Blue), Milwaukie (Orange), Clackamas (Green), and the city centre. The Pearl District and the South Waterfront are served by the Portland Streetcar (A and B loops). TriMet buses cover the full metro area.

Cycling is genuinely practical: Portland has an extensive network of dedicated bike lanes, and the Willamette riverfront paths allow north–south movement off roads. Biketown, the city's bike-share programme, has stations across the central city and inner east side. Many Portlanders commute by bicycle year-round, rain included.

Taxis and ride-share (Uber, Lyft) are available. Parking downtown is expensive and the street parking system is metered. For trips within the central city, walking, cycling, or MAX are faster than driving. The Washington Park MAX station (underground, the deepest in North America) gives direct access to the zoo, Hoyt Arboretum, and the Japanese Garden.
