Pok Pok

Pok Pok on SE Division Street established Portland's reputation for serious Southeast Asian food and influenced Thai restaurants across the United States. The menu focuses on northern Thai and Isan (northeastern Thai) dishes rarely seen in the US: khao man gai (poached chicken rice), som tam (papaya salad with fermented crab), and the famous wing wings — fish sauce–caramelised chicken wings that became the restaurant's signature dish.

The original Division Street location operates in a lively outdoor space with communal tables; the adjacent Whiskey Soda Lounge handles overflow and serves the drinking snacks known as drinking food. The kitchen is serious and the wait times can be significant on weekend evenings; reservations are taken. The Division Street strip around Pok Pok has become one of Portland's most concentrated food destinations.

A story
Pok Pok began as a shack on a bicycle outside chef Andy Ricker's house in SE Division Street and grew into one of the most influential Thai restaurants in America. Ricker had spent years travelling and eating in Thailand, specifically in the north and northeast of the country where the food differs significantly from the Thai-American canon. Pok Pok's success — including a New York expansion and a James Beard Award for Ricker — helped change how Americans understood regional Thai cuisine.
