Things to Do

Salem punches above its weight for a state capital of its size. The Oregon State Capitol and its surrounding mall anchor the civic core, while Willamette Heritage Center on the old mill race offers one of the Pacific Northwest's best windows into pioneer-era industry. Bush's Pasture Park sprawls across 90 acres just south of downtown — rose gardens, a Victorian mansion, and one of the oldest greenhouse conservatories west of the Mississippi, all in one afternoon.

For wine, the Eola-Amity Hills lie just fifteen minutes west of downtown. This sub-appellation of the Willamette Valley AVA consistently produces some of Oregon's finest Pinot Noir, and most tasting rooms welcome walk-ins.
