Salem

Oregon state capital in the Willamette Valley, surrounded by Pinot Noir wine country.

Salem is Oregon's state capital, sitting in the Willamette Valley between Portland and Eugene. It's quieter than Portland, which some people see as a feature rather than a bug — walkable downtown, low prices, and easy access to some of the state's best scenery.

The valley around Salem is serious wine country. The Willamette Valley AVA produces acclaimed Pinot Noir, and dozens of wineries within an easy drive of the city welcome visitors. The Eola-Amity Hills just west of Salem are particularly good, with tasting rooms that don't require booking in advance.

In town, the Oregon State Capitol with its distinctive gold-capped dome is worth a look, and Willamette Heritage Center tells the story of Oregon's pioneer and industrial history on the banks of the mill race. Bush's Pasture Park is a pleasant stretch of urban green space with rose gardens and an art centre.
