Grandview Cemetery

Hillside cemetery containing the Unknown Plot, mass grave for unidentified flood victims

Grandview Cemetery on Millcreek Road occupies a hillside above the city and holds a sobering piece of flood history. The cemetery's Unknown Plot contains the graves of 777 flood victims who were never identified — roughly a third of all those who died. Many were so badly mutilated or decomposed by the time they were recovered from the debris field that identification was impossible. The plot is marked by a monument and is one of the more quietly devastating places in Johnstown.

Beyond the flood graves, the cemetery offers one of the better elevated views of the valley. It is an active working cemetery and is open to respectful visitors during daylight hours.
