Intercourse is a small village east of Lancaster in the middle of Pennsylvania Dutch country. Its name gets the jokes out of the way quickly, but the real draw is the setting: Amish and Mennonite farms, horse-drawn buggies on the roads, quilt shops, bakeries, and tidy fields rolling away from the old turnpike.
This is one of Lancaster County's most visited villages, so do not expect a secret rural idyll. Tour buses come through, shops are geared to visitors, and the main road can feel busy in season. Step away from the storefronts, though, and the countryside still has the slower rhythm that makes the area interesting.
Intercourse works best as part of a half-day loop through Bird-in-Hand, Paradise, Strasburg, and Lancaster City. Come for crafts, quilts, local food, and a respectful look at Amish country rather than a theme-park version of it.
