Scranton sits at the western edge of the Poconos and is a serviceable base for trips into the surrounding mountains and the upper Lehigh River. The closest day trip is the Lackawanna Coal Mine in McDade Park — already covered as a thing to do — but for full-day excursions, the Pocono lake district to the east and the upper Susquehanna River to the south both deserve a car-based day.
