Cooper's Seafood House

Cooper's Seafood House is a Scranton institution on North Washington Avenue — a kitsch pirate-themed seafood restaurant that has been pulling people in since the 1940s. The building is unmissable: a half-timber pirate ship rises out of one corner of the roof, and a giant red octopus grips the front gable.

Inside, the menu is a mile long and runs from regulation fried clams and lobster rolls to genuinely good crab cakes and a creditable cioppino. The portions are American-large. Reservations recommended on weekends; the bar is a good place to sit and eat if you have not booked.

A story
The Cooper family has been running fish restaurants in north-eastern Pennsylvania since 1948. The Scranton building was given its current pirate-ship theme — complete with an octopus on the roof — in the 1970s and has not really changed since.
