Angelo's at 141 Atwells Avenue on Federal Hill has been serving the same red-sauce Italian-American menu since 1924, which makes it one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in Providence. The menu is unapologetically old-fashioned: homemade ravioli, cavatelli with broccoli rabe, veal parmesan, baked ziti. Everything is made from scratch at prices that seem impossibly reasonable for the quality.
The room is plain, the service is efficient, and the line on weekend evenings is real. Cash only. No website, no reservation system. You show up, put your name on the list, and wait at the bar. The cavatelli and the tortellini with meat sauce are reliable standbys; the daily specials are worth asking about.
