Getting Around

Providence is compact and walkable. Most visitors can reach College Hill, downtown, and Federal Hill on foot — the distances between neighborhoods are short and the terrain, while hilly, is manageable.

On foot: The riverwalk connecting downtown to Waterplace Park is flat and pleasant. College Hill requires climbing, but Benefit Street and the Brown campus reward the effort. Most interesting sights are within about a mile of Providence Station.

By bus: RIPTA runs local bus routes throughout the city and connects to the suburbs. Kennedy Plaza is the main hub. Routes are adequate for getting to Roger Williams Park and other outlying destinations.

By rideshare: Uber and Lyft both operate in Providence. Useful for T.F. Green Airport connections or late-night travel.

By train: Amtrak's Northeast Regional and Acela stop at Providence Station, 100 Gaspee Street, a short walk from downtown. Boston is 45 minutes; New York Penn Station about 3 hours.
