When to Go

Providence has four genuine seasons. Summers are warm and humid, typically in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius, and make the best use of the riverwalks and outdoor restaurant seating. The WaterFire schedule runs from spring through autumn on selected Saturdays, and summer evenings along the river are among the city's best experiences.

Autumn is the most pleasant time to visit for weather and atmosphere — the College Hill foliage is excellent, and the Brown University academic calendar brings the city back to life in September. Winters are cold and occasionally snowy, but the city remains fully functional and the dining scene doesn't slow down. Spring arrives gradually from March; April is unpredictable but often beautiful.

The city is busiest during Brown and RISD graduation weekends in late May, when hotel rates spike. The holiday WaterFire events in November and early December draw large crowds.
