Folly Beach is about 12 miles south of downtown Charleston via James Island. By car, take the Folly Road (SC-171) south from Charleston — the drive takes about 20 minutes in light traffic, longer in summer. There is no direct public transit from Charleston to Folly Beach; CARTA buses serve James Island but do not extend onto Folly Island. Most visitors drive or cycle from Charleston. Parking fills up fast on summer weekends.
