Folly Beach is the closest surf spot to Charleston and the most popular in South Carolina, with consistent small waves year-round and occasional larger swells from Atlantic storms in late summer and autumn. The breaks on either side of the pier are the most reliable, though the beach along the southwest end of the island can also be good when the wind is right.
The local surf culture runs deep — Folly has had a surf community since the 1960s, and several surf shops on Center Street sell boards, rent equipment, and give lessons. Beginners are better served at the gentler breaks away from the pier; experienced surfers head there for the better shape. Water temperatures are warm enough to surf without a wetsuit from May through October.
