The William M. Bass Forensic Anthropology Center at the University of Tennessee — widely known as the Body Farm — is a research facility that studies human decomposition under outdoor conditions. Founded in 1981, it is the original such facility in the world and has trained forensic investigators and contributed to criminal prosecutions across the United States.
The facility is not open to the public, but it is worth knowing about: the research done here genuinely changed forensic science and law enforcement. FBI agents, medical examiners, and forensic anthropologists from around the world have trained on site. If you are curious about the science, the East Tennessee History Center downtown has context on William Bass's career and the facility's influence.
