Urban Wilderness

The Urban Wilderness is a network of roughly 50 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails on the south side of Knoxville, connecting several parks and natural areas within minutes of downtown. The anchor is Ijams Nature Center, a 300-acre wildlife sanctuary along the Tennessee River that runs extensive trail programmes and has good kayak access.

The trail network is genuinely impressive for a mid-size American city — most of it is wooded and rocky, with river views and enough elevation change to feel like a real hike rather than a stroll through a manicured park. Baker Creek Preserve and the South Knoxville Riverside Park are the other main access points. The whole area is free to access and well maintained. Mountain bikers have built a strong community here, and the harder trails on the south ridge challenge experienced riders. For hikers, the loop from Ijams along the river to the old marble quarry and back is around five miles and covers the best of the terrain.
