Big Ears Festival

Big Ears is Knoxville's annual music festival, held over four days each spring. It takes over the Tennessee Theatre, the Bijou Theatre, the Mill and Mine, and several other downtown venues simultaneously, presenting a programme that defies easy genre description. The festival has built a strong reputation internationally for its curation, attracting audiences from across the country and beyond.

If your visit happens to coincide with Big Ears — usually held in late March — it is worth planning around. Passes sell out months in advance. Outside festival time, the venues that host it are the same ones worth visiting for regular programming throughout the year.

A story
Big Ears was founded in 2009 and bills itself as a festival of curious music. It is deliberately hard to categorise — past lineups have included minimalist composers, jazz improvisers, folk musicians, and experimental electronic artists, sometimes all in the same evening.
