Volunteer Landing is a riverfront park along the Tennessee River at the southern edge of downtown. The path runs for about a mile below the historic Gay Street and Henley Street bridges, connecting downtown to the university district on foot or by bike. Kayak and canoe rentals are available in season, and the riverfront gives you a perspective on the city that the street grid doesn't provide.
The Tennessee River is wide and slow here, and the park is a popular spot for an evening walk. From certain angles you can see both the old Henley Bridge — a 1931 Art Deco span — and the Sunsphere tower above the treeline. A small amphitheater at the landing hosts outdoor events in summer.
