A working astronomical observatory owned and operated by the University of the South, sitting at around 2,000 feet on the Cumberland Plateau. The high elevation and low light pollution — the plateau is genuinely dark by American standards — make it a productive site for amateur and student astronomy.
The observatory holds public viewing nights at scheduled times during the academic year, when the university's 24-inch reflector telescope is available to visitors. Check the university's physics department website for the current schedule. On clear nights, views of the Milky Way from the campus edges are excellent without a telescope at all.
