The obvious day trip from Amarillo is Palo Duro Canyon, which lies just outside Canyon, 25 miles to the southeast. The canyon is dramatic enough that it is genuinely surprising more people don't know about it — 800-foot walls of red, orange, and yellow rock carved by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. Allow a full day if you want to hike.
