The Big Texan Steak Ranch

Home of the legendary free 72-ounce steak challenge

Address 7701 East I-40

The most famous restaurant on the Texas stretch of Route 66, the Big Texan has been luring drivers off I-40 since 1960 with its promise of a free 72-ounce steak — provided you can eat the whole thing, along with a shrimp cocktail, baked potato, salad, and roll, in under an hour. Fewer than one in five people who attempt it succeed. The restaurant is enormous, loud, and unabashedly theatrical, with a gift shop, a motel, and a shooting range attached. Even if you have no intention of attempting the challenge, the regular steaks are good and the spectacle is worth seeing. Located at 7701 East I-40.
