Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach is the closest ocean beach to Houston, about 75 miles south of the city on a Gulf barrier island in Brazoria County. Four miles of public beach run along the Gulf of Mexico, backed by modest beach houses and a handful of rental shops, bait stores, and seafood restaurants. The Gulf water here is warmer and calmer than Atlantic beaches further east, and the modest waves make it accessible for swimmers of all levels.

The Surfside jetties, flanking the old mouth of the Brazos River, are a favourite for pier fishing — redfish, trout, and flounder are common catches. The beach itself permits driving on the packed sand, which is a convenience for family beach days. Surfboard, kayak, and jet-ski rentals are available near the main access point. On weekdays outside the summer, you can walk long stretches without seeing another person.

A story
Surfside Beach sits at the mouth of the old Brazos River channel, which was diverted in the 1920s to prevent silting in the Houston Ship Channel. The jetties that mark the old river mouth are now one of the most productive surf fishing spots on the upper Texas coast. The beach itself is publicly accessible by driving on the hard-packed sand — a Texas tradition that keeps the barrier island accessible even without commercial development.
