The Brazosport area's main appeal is a combination of Gulf Coast beach access and exceptional birdwatching. Quintana Beach County Park is the most rewarding beach destination — well-maintained, uncrowded, and good for fishing and families. Surfside Beach is four miles of open Gulf shoreline close to Houston, popular for swimming, surf fishing, and casual beach days.
Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge and the adjacent San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge together form one of the most important winter waterbird refuges on the Texas coast. Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson is a free state aquarium and the world's largest redfish hatchery. The Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences in Clute has a planetarium and natural history museum. For fishing, the Freeport harbor is where the working shrimping fleet docks and where you can buy fresh catch direct from the boats; Brazos River fishing and kayaking offers inshore action in the tidal river channels.
History is not the area's main draw, but the Battle of Velasco site at the river mouth marks the first armed clash of the Texas Revolution. Lake Jackson's City Hall, designed by Alden B. Dow, is the most architecturally significant building in the area, a reminder that this company town was built with modernist ambitions.
