When to Go

The Brazosport area is a year-round destination with two distinct seasons for its two main activities.

For birdwatching, November through March is the peak. Snow geese arrive by the hundreds of thousands, whooping cranes occasionally pass through, and ducks of twenty-plus species winter in the refuges. January and February are typically the most spectacular months at Brazoria and San Bernard wildlife refuges.

For beaches, spring and autumn are most pleasant. March through May and September through November have comfortable temperatures (20–28°C), calm Gulf water, and relatively quiet beaches. Summer (June to August) is hot and humid, with temperatures regularly above 35°C — the beaches are crowded with Houston families escaping the city, and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent. Surfside Beach can be raw in winter when Gulf winds come in strong from the north.

Tropical storm and hurricane season runs from June through November. The Brazoria County coastline has taken direct hits from Gulf storms historically and is low-lying. Check weather forecasts carefully if visiting during this period.
