Beaches

Galveston has 32 miles of Gulf Coast beaches, but visitors should understand the character of Gulf water before arriving expecting Caribbean clarity. The water is warm but murky — brown-green from Mississippi River sediment carried along the coast — and the waves are small. None of this stops Houstonians from filling the island every summer weekend, and Galveston's beaches are perfectly functional for swimming, sunbathing, and building sandcastles.

East Beach is the largest and most energetic, with facilities, parking, and a reputation for a livelier atmosphere including permitted alcohol on the sand. Stewart Beach near the eastern end of the Seawall is the family-friendly option with a water park, restrooms, and lifeguards. The free county beaches along the Seawall from 25th Street west are the most accessible and least commercial. West Beach, farther along the island toward Jamaica Beach, is less developed and popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers. The best time for a quieter beach day is a weekday in May, September, or October, when the water is warm but the Houston crowd is at work.
