Seawolf Park

Address Seawolf Park, Pelican Island, Galveston, TX

Seawolf Park sits on Pelican Island, accessible by a short causeway from Galveston's north shore, and is home to two preserved World War II vessels: the USS Cavalla, a submarine that sank the Japanese carrier Shokaku in 1944, and the USS Stewart, a destroyer escort. Both are open to visitors who can explore the cramped interiors and understand something of the conditions in which their crews operated.

The park itself is a pleasant waterfront area with fishing piers, picnic grounds, and sweeping views across the bay toward the Galveston skyline and the channel where oceangoing ships move in and out of Houston. The submarine is the more interesting of the two vessels — the control room and torpedo rooms convey the claustrophobia of underwater warfare effectively. The park is often less crowded than the Strand attractions, and the combination of the warships, the working harbour views, and the fishing pier makes it a good afternoon outing.
