The Grand 1894 Opera House is the Official Opera House of Texas, built in 1894 and still operating as a full-time performing arts venue. The building survived the 1900 hurricane, was restored in the 1980s after decades of deterioration, and reopened to a schedule that brings touring Broadway shows, concerts, and local productions through Galveston throughout the year.
The theatre seats about 1,000, and the restored interior — the plasterwork, the gilded decorations, the curve of the balcony — is worth seeing for a performance of any kind. The building is on Postoffice Street, the cultural center of 19th-century Galveston, where several other historic buildings survive. Check the schedule before visiting; the opera house is one of the few places in Galveston where the evening programme is as interesting as the history.
