Luling

Central Texas oil-and-watermelon town with painted pumpjacks, barbecue, and a river mill.

Luling is a small Central Texas town with more personality than its size suggests. Oil made it rowdy in the 1920s, watermelons gave it a festival, and the old pumpjacks around town have been painted into cartoon characters, which tells you a lot about the local mood.

This is not a polished Hill Country destination. It is a half-day to full-day stop for people who like odd Texas towns: Zedler Mill, the Luling Oil Museum, the pumpjack trail, and barbecue smoke drifting through the centre.

If you want nature, Palmetto State Park is close enough to fold into the same day, with dwarf palmettos, swampy trails, and a very different feel from the dry ranch country nearby.

Eating Out

Barbecue is the food reason to stop in Luling. The town sits in the Central Texas smoke belt, and the old meat-market style still matters more than decoration.
