Bars and Cafes

San Antonio takes its nightlife seriously, with a bar scene shaped by its Spanish and Mexican heritage. The River Walk draws tourists, but venture beyond it for the real character.

Esquire Tavern

The oldest tavern in Texas, Esquire still packs locals and visitors into its well-worn, old-school interior. Grab a beer, join a game of pool, and let the jukebox set the mood. One of the cheapest spots in town, and still popular after more than 70 years.

Rosario's Mexican Cafe Y Cantina

More than a quiet cafe, Rosario's operates like a bar and dance hall with live salsa bands and a kitchen turning out some of the best Mexican food in San Antonio. The margaritas are outstanding. Expect a wait on most nights, but it is worth it.

Casbeers

Unassuming from the outside and eclectic on the inside, Casbeers has ceiling fans growing out of old tires and walls painted in improbable colors. The enchiladas are good, but the real draw is live music ranging from local songwriters to rock-and-roll.
