Mi Tierra Café y Bakery

A San Antonio institution since 1941, Mi Tierra occupies a sprawling building in Market Square and stays open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The dining room is decorated with thousands of Christmas lights and Day of the Dead altars; the menu runs the full range of Mexican and Tex-Mex cooking, from breakfast tacos and huevos rancheros to enchiladas and menudo. The adjoining bakery turns out pan dulce, conchas, and tres leches cakes.

It is popular and occasionally tourist-heavy, but the food is consistently good and the atmosphere is unlike anything else in the city. Go for breakfast to beat the crowds; the Mexican hot chocolate and huevos rancheros are the right way to start a day in San Antonio.
