Box Elder Stake Tabernacle

Striking neo-Gothic LDS tabernacle rebuilt after an 1896 fire

The Box Elder Stake Tabernacle dominates the south end of Main Street. It is a handsome neo-Gothic building with pointed arches and a distinctive tower, rebuilt in 1897 after the original tabernacle burned down a year earlier. The building is still used for community events and concerts and is worth a look from the outside even if it is closed.

The adjacent Brigham City Utah Temple, completed in 2012, is a more recent addition to the religious landscape. Together they anchor the southern end of Main Street, which is the town's most pleasant stretch for a stroll — old brick commercial buildings, a few antique shops, and the Peach Days festival venue every September.

A story
The original tabernacle was built between 1865 and 1890. In 1896, just six years after completion, it burned down. The pioneers rebuilt it within a year in the neo-Gothic style you see today — a remarkably rapid feat of construction.
