Equinox Mountain

Equinox Mountain rises to 1,163 metres (3,816 feet) above the valley floor, the highest peak of the Taconic Range visible from Manchester. On a clear day the summit offers views into four states: Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, and Massachusetts. The mountain can be reached by the Equinox Skyline Drive (a toll road), by hiking trails from the valley, or on foot from the Equinox resort, which maintains trails through its grounds.

The most popular walking route is the Red Trail, which begins near the Equinox hotel and climbs through hardwood forest before emerging on the open ridge. The full ascent takes two to three hours. At the top, the wind can be fierce and the temperature is usually 10°C cooler than the valley — bring a layer. The drive down through the spruce forest in late afternoon light is one of the more pleasant experiences southern Vermont has to offer.

A story
The Equinox Skyline Drive, a private toll road that winds to the summit, was originally built in the 1850s as a carriage road for wealthy guests at the Equinox resort. In the 1920s, it was upgraded for automobiles and became one of the first summit drives in the Northeast. The Equinox resort itself has hosted several US presidents, including Taft, Grant, and Theodore Roosevelt, all of whom came for the mountain air.
