Manchester is a small Vermont town that punches well above its weight for shopping and scenery. Nestled in the Green Mountains with views of Mount Equinox rising above the valley, it draws visitors for its famous outlet stores — a dense strip of designer brands that has made the town the retail capital of southern Vermont — and for the quieter pleasures of the surrounding hills.
Beyond the shopping, Manchester rewards a slower pace. Hildene, the Lincoln family summer home, sits just south of town and offers one of the best historic house visits in New England. The Equinox Resort has been here since the 18th century. In summer, the area fills with hikers and fly fishers; in autumn, the foliage along Route 7A is genuinely spectacular. The American Museum of Fly Fishing is a small but excellent collection that works even for non-anglers.
Manchester Village and Manchester Center are effectively one town but feel different in character: the Village is quieter, with old churches and marble sidewalks (Vermont once quarried marble here in quantity), while the Center is where most of the shops and restaurants are. The outlet strip between them can get congested on autumn weekends — if you can, visit midweek or in the quieter shoulder seasons.
