State Street runs east from the State House through the heart of downtown Montpelier, lined with a remarkable concentration of 19th-century commercial architecture — granite-faced banks, brick storefronts with cast-iron shopfronts, and a handful of Greek Revival civic buildings. The entire stretch is on the National Register of Historic Places.
It is the obvious place to start a walking tour. The Pavilion (state offices, 109 State), Christ Episcopal Church (64 State), and the granite Supreme Court building (111 State) are all here, with the city's best bookshop — Bear Pond Books — a few doors east of the State House on Main.
