Stowe eats well for a small Vermont village, largely because the ski and tourism industry demands it. The Mountain Road (Vermont Route 108) heading up toward the resort is lined with restaurants covering everything from pub food to more refined New England cooking. The village itself has a tighter cluster of options around the green.
Vermont specialties worth seeking out include aged cheddar from local farms (the Cabot and Grafton varieties are excellent), maple syrup used in cooking (not just on pancakes), and the local craft beer scene — Von Trapp Brewing at the Trapp Family Lodge produces solid Austrian-style lagers. For a proper dinner, the better restaurants on Mountain Road tend toward American regional cooking with local ingredients. Prices are resort-town elevated; booking ahead on winter weekends is sensible.
