The Blue Ridge Parkway is the most spectacular day trip from Lynchburg. The Peaks of Otter section, about 25 miles from the city, has several good hiking trails to summit viewpoints and a lake walk. The Appalachian Trail crosses the Parkway at several points nearby. The Natural Bridge, a 215-foot-high natural limestone arch that Thomas Jefferson once owned, is about 40 miles southwest.
