Lynchburg's seven hills hold a remarkably intact 19th-century streetscape, and its position at the foot of the Blue Ridge makes it an excellent base for outdoor excursions. The city's history — tobacco wealth, Civil War survival, and a complex racial past — is well told in several good museums.
