The James River Heritage Trail runs along the bluff above the James River through central Lynchburg, offering elevated views of the river below and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. The trail connects Point of Honor mansion and several city parks along the ridge and is a pleasant place for an evening walk or morning run.
The James River itself is accessible at various points along the trail, and kayak and canoe launches exist near downtown. The river here is calm enough for tubing and beginner paddling, with the faster water further upstream. Several local outfitters rent equipment seasonally. The trail and riverfront access represent some of the better-spent downtown revitalization money of recent years — a genuine addition to the city's livability.
