Newport News is not a food destination, but it does Chesapeake Bay seafood well — particularly soft-shell crabs in spring, blue crabs in summer, and oysters from the lower bay in autumn. The Hilton Village area on Warwick Boulevard has a cluster of older neighbourhood places, the City Center at Oyster Point has the newer chain and bistro options, and the Smithfield Station area south of the James River Bridge is worth the drive for proper crab-house dining over the water.
