Newport News sits at the southern end of the Virginia Peninsula and has some of the most rewarding day-trip territory in the United States within easy reach. Colonial Williamsburg is 20 minutes north — a remarkable living-history reconstruction of the 18th-century capital of Virginia — and the original site of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America, sits beside it on the river. Together with Yorktown they form the Historic Triangle.
South across Hampton Roads are Norfolk (the world's largest naval base, plus the Chrysler Museum) and Virginia Beach (boardwalk and ocean), both reachable by car via the bridge-tunnel or — more pleasantly — by the cross-harbour ferry from downtown.
