Newport News Park

8,000 acres of woods, lakes and Civil War battlefield — the largest municipal park east of the Mississippi

At 8,000 acres, this is one of the largest municipal parks in the country — a great stretch of pine forest, swamp and reservoir at the northern edge of the city. There are over 30 miles of mountain-bike and hiking trails, two golf courses, an archery range, an aero-modelling field, and a campground with proper sites for tents and RVs. You can rent rowing boats and pedaloes on the Lee Hall Reservoir.

The park also contains the Dam No. 1 Battlefield, where on 16 April 1862 Union and Confederate forces fought a sharp little engagement that is reckoned the first major battle of the Peninsula Campaign. A self-guided 2.5-mile interpretive trail runs through the earthworks, which are remarkably well preserved.
