Fort Hunt Park is a leafy National Park Service site south of Alexandria with the remains of coastal defence batteries from a former army installation. You can explore the exterior works on foot while joggers and families use the picnic areas around them.
It is a quieter stop than nearby Mount Vernon, but worthwhile if you are following the Potomac's military history or want a low-key walk with a few historic structures along the way.
