Great Falls Park protects the Virginia side of the Potomac where the river drops through a narrow, rocky gorge. The overlooks are close to the visitor centre, so you can see the falls without a long hike, but the park is much better if you keep walking along the river.
Trails range from easy riverside paths to rougher routes with views into Mather Gorge. Weekends can bring long lines at the entrance, especially in good weather, so arrive early if you want a quiet walk or a picnic spot.
