Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum

Remarkably intact 1792 apothecary, one of the oldest in America

One of the best-preserved historic apothecaries in the United States, operating in Old Town Alexandria from 1792 to 1933. When the last owner died and the shop finally closed, the contents were left largely intact: hundreds of hand-blown glass bottles, medical instruments, old prescription books, and drug preparation equipment.

The museum occupies the original two-storey shop, and a guided tour takes you through the history of medicine and pharmacy as it was practised over the shop's 141 years. The visual effect of the original glass-fronted shelves packed with period bottles is remarkable. Small museum in a convenient Old Town location; easy to combine with a walk along King Street. Adults around $10.

A story
The apothecary's records show a 1802 delivery of linseed oil to "Mrs. Washington of Mount Vernon" — one of many transactions connecting the shop to the founding era. Robert E. Lee was in the shop buying medicine for his horses when a messenger arrived with orders to report immediately to the War Department; he left and went to meet the crisis that would lead to his fateful decision to resign his US Army commission.
