Port Orchard

The county seat of Kitsap sits across Sinclair Inlet from Bremerton, looking straight at the dry docks and aircraft carriers of the Naval Shipyard. It is smaller and quieter than Bremerton, with a single old-fashioned main street — Bay Street — running along the water under a continuous covered arcade, lined with antique shops, used bookstores and a couple of long-running diners.

The foot ferry from the marina is the easiest way to cross — pedestrians only, ten minutes, runs every half hour, costs the price of a coffee. The Saturday Farmers' Market on the waterfront (May to October) is the busiest day. Two of the peninsula's stranger attractions — Elandan Gardens and the Port Orchard Hobbit House — are a few miles out, on Highway 16.
