Pasayten Wilderness

The Pasayten Wilderness covers more than half a million acres on the west side of Okanogan County, stretching to the Canadian border — one of the largest and most remote wilderness areas in Washington state. There are no roads inside it. Trails run for hundreds of miles through lodgepole pine forests, open ridgelines, subalpine meadows, and river valleys that see almost no foot traffic by Pacific Northwest standards. The Cascade Crest and the border are both reachable on foot.

The main access points from the Okanogan side are along the Toats Coulee and Chewuch River drainages. The wilderness rewards those who come prepared for genuine remoteness: distances are long, resupply is not possible, and weather can be severe even in summer. For shorter outings, the Boundary Trail along the northern edge offers high views with manageable day-hike segments.
