Ritter Park and Sunken Gardens

Ritter Park is Huntington's main city park, and within it the Sunken Gardens is the most distinctive element. The gardens sit in a natural depression — formerly a limestone quarry — and are laid out in a formal style with rose beds, seasonal plantings, stone paths, and a central fountain. The surrounding trees are large and old, and the garden has the feel of something that has been tended carefully for a long time.

The broader park includes tennis courts, walking paths along a creek, and a small amphitheatre. In summer, when the rose gardens are at their peak, the Sunken Gardens are genuinely beautiful. The park is free and open at all hours.

A story
The Sunken Gardens occupy a former limestone quarry that was worked until the early 20th century. When the quarry was exhausted, the city filled it with soil and planted a formal garden in the depression — a transformation that took nearly a decade and is today entirely invisible to anyone walking through.
