Coopers Rock State Forest

Coopers Rock State Forest covers nearly 13,000 acres of ridges and hollows east of Morgantown, about 13 miles out on I-68. The main overlook above Cheat Canyon is one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Appalachians — a long eastward view across forested ridges and the Cheat River winding far below through a 1,000-foot gorge. In fall the colours are exceptional.

The climbing is legitimate. The Coopers Rock area has sandstone walls up to 80 feet high, and the routes range from beginner-friendly top-rope crags to harder sport and traditional climbs. The rock quality is generally good and the area has been developed by the local climbing community over decades. Bring your own gear — there's no rental on site.

Hiking trails cover about 50 miles of terrain. The Henry Clay Iron Furnace, a preserved mid-nineteenth-century iron-smelting facility in the forest, is worth a short detour for the industrial archaeology.

The forest is free to enter. The main overlook has a small concession stand in summer. From Morgantown, take I-68 east to Exit 15.
