Milwaukee is a driving city but the downtown core and the main neighbourhoods — the Third Ward, Bay View, the East Side — are all walkable or easily connected by bus. The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) covers most of the city; fares are affordable and the main routes run reliably.
The Milwaukee Riverwalk path is the best way to move between downtown and the Third Ward on foot, following the river through several kilometres of waterfront. Cycling is increasingly practical — the city has expanded its protected lane network in recent years and bike share (Bublr Bikes) is available at stations throughout downtown and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Taxis are available at the airport and major hotels but are not abundant on the street. Rideshare (Uber, Lyft) is widely used and reliable. Parking downtown is generally easier than in comparable American cities, which encourages driving, but it adds nothing to the experience of a city that rewards walking.
