Cementerio de la Chacarita

Working-class cemetery where Carlos Gardel and Juan Perón are buried, with macabre Argentine political history

The working-class counterpoint to the grand Recoleta Cemetery. Cementerio de la Chacarita is where Carlos Gardel, the definitive voice of tango, and former president Juan Perón are buried (Perón's tomb was broken into in 1987 and his hands cut off — a classic bit of Argentine political macabre). Gardel's tomb is the pilgrimage site, with a perpetual lit cigarette placed between the statue's fingers. Less grand than Recoleta, more authentic.
