The former Navy Mechanics School (Escuela de Mecánica de la Armada) was one of the main clandestine detention and torture centres used by the Argentine military during the dictatorship of 1976–83. It is now a museum and memorial space operated jointly by several human rights organisations.
The site is large and the documentation extensive — this is not a comfortable visit, but it is one of the most important places in Argentina for understanding what happened during the dictatorship and how the country is working to account for it. Guided tours are run by survivors and family members of victims. The Casino de Oficiales building, where prisoners were held, is preserved as evidence rather than as exhibition. Free; tours must be booked in advance.
